Oldham has a proud history of supporting the persecuted. As of March last year, our town is home to 910 asylum seekers, 145 of whom are in hotel accommodation, but there the housing crisis meets the homelessness crisis: 1,000 people in temporary accommodation, including 500 children. Is it not time that the Government reviewed the dispersal policy, to ensure that every part of England plays its fair share? I gently point out that Braintree is home to just two asylum seekers, as opposed to Oldham’s 910.
I am happy to explain the process by which we got to the motion, if that is helpful, although I am not sure whether it will convince Government Members to vote with us later. To be clear, if there had been a route to reintroducing the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill as it stood after Second Reading, that would be in the motion before us, but given the sunset clause built into that Bill, the advice was that it died weeks ago, so we could not do that. That is why the motion speaks of a No. 2 Bill, but word by word, line by line and paragraph by paragraph, it would be exactly the same Bill. In…full text ↗
This has been an insightful debate and it was good to hear the passion on both sides from hon. Members who really care about this issue. New clause 1 only asks the Government to perform good governance, in that we want them to have a plan, to report on the plan and to be held accountable for the plan. The right place for that to happen is here in Parliament. I hope the Government have listened to the concerns in the House about support for British farmers. I absolutely believe that they are the best in the world and that we have raised the bar on animal welfare standards and food production…full text ↗

Action: Introduces legislation strengthening animal welfare standards in livestock farming — banning cages, ending routine preventative antibiotic use, and limiting the scale of intensive operations.
UK: Higher welfare standards in UK livestock farming may increase production costs, potentially reducing the economic competitiveness of intensive livestock operations relative to plant-based alternatives, which are associated with lower greenhouse gas emissions and land use impacts.
Global: UK animal welfare legislation could raise the floor for export market access standards, encouraging trading partners to adopt similar practices, which may contribute to global reductions in antimicrobial resistance and improvements in animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
