We are now in a very dangerous moment, when the war in Gaza risks spreading into a much wider and even more deadly war across the middle east. There is a real risk that our country will find itself in yet another war in the middle east that it cannot get out of easily. To avoid any wider war, do we not now need an emphasis on de-escalation and diplomatic efforts? Does the need to seek such a wider diplomatic solution not make it more urgent to be pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza?
I will briefly touch on the reasons why I think it is important that this elected Chamber does the right thing and rejects the Government’s opposition to the message from the other place. I will focus on two amendments—Lords amendments 4B and 5B—that go to the heart of this matter and the heart of this pernicious Bill. They relate to the protection of employees and protections for unions. Action: Introduces legislation strengthening animal welfare standards in livestock farming — banning cages, ending routine preventative antibiotic use, and limiting the scale of intensive operations.
UK: Higher welfare standards in UK livestock farming may increase production costs, potentially reducing the economic competitiveness of intensive livestock operations relative to plant-based alternatives, which are associated with lower greenhouse gas emissions and land use impacts.
Global: UK animal welfare legislation could raise the floor for export market access standards, encouraging trading partners to adopt similar practices, which may contribute to global reductions in antimicrobial resistance and improvements in animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
